Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?”

Updated: Aug 1

Let's explore the idea of walking together in a world with different views, ideas, and beliefs.

In the book of Amos [3:3] there is a provoking verse: “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?”

This verse suggests that unity and agreement are essential for companionship. When people share common goals, values, and understanding, they can walk in harmony.

This ancient biblical wisdom proves that for two to walk together they must take on the moral conduct of the creator. These times we find ourselves in a world that embraces, greed, pride, deception, and manipulation with no regard for the truth. We celebrate those who take advantage of others.

It is almost impossible for two to walk together and truly agree on conducting themselves according to the image of which they were created by God.

When we look at the book of Amos, Amos warned the Israelites that they would be destroyed if they did not repent. They were living in direct opposition to the image they were created to be because of their sinful nature. We cannot walk with God when we are living continuously in opposition to the precepts that govern the citizens of the kingdom of God. When we take on the immoral conduct of this world it is impossible to walk with God. God’s morality is the foundation upon which he created this world. We cannot take on the immoral character of this world and superficially profess to be a Christian. When we profess to be a child of God and we don’t keep his commandment, we take his name in vain, and we do not love him. In the book of John [14: 15] Jesus said, If you [really] love Me, you will keep and obey My commandments.

Obedience to the word of God gives us access to walk with God. Obedience is the greatest demonstration of our faith in God. Jesus' sermon on the mount calls us to be united with him.

John 15  “[a]I am the true Vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that continues to bear fruit, He [repeatedly] prunes, so that it will bear more fruit [even richer and finer fruit]. You are already clean because of the word which I have given you [the teachings which I have discussed with you]. Remain in Me, and I [will remain] in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself without remaining in the vine, neither can you [bear fruit, producing evidence of your faith] unless you remain in Me.

Jesus tells us in John 15, without fruit-bearing, we cannot enter his presence, therefore we cannot walk with him. Fruit bearing is living a life that reflects Jesus’ character, nature, and lifestyle.

Man’s relationship with God should not be a religious act, our relationship with God must include our entire life, our nature, our character, and our lifestyle must reflect the image of which we were created to be. For us to walk with God, we must be truly born again with the regeneration of our spirit by the holy spirit through repentance. We must be truly broken to realize we need Jesus. It is only then we are open to be submissive and ready to truly repent of our sins. It is at that moment of sincere submission that opens the door to our heart to the acceptance of Regeneration. It cannot be fake or copied by Satan or by man. That living water that comes from another world must give birth on the inside of our heart, to enable transformation from an immoral to a moral character. That is when the old becomes new.  In the book of Psalm [34:18], “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit”. When our heart is broken, and our spirit is crushed, it is giving the holy spirit access to regenerate our spirit saving us from our iniquities.

We cannot walk with God if we are not open to loving those who hate us or those who despitefully used and abused us. When our spirit is truly regenerated, it gives us access to God’s ability that enables us to love our enemies. It is only then; that we will be able to forgive those who despitefully used and abused us. We will than have the desire to pray for our enemy. We will then have the desire to demonstrate the agape love that brings believers together, by driving two miles out of our way to take a brother home asking for nothing in return, just to give him the advantage. Our abilities are very limited, that is why we need Jesus to enable us to desire the moral conduct of the kingdom of God, that gives us true transformation that reflects the image of which we were created to be.

In conclusion, two cannot walk together unless they are the reflection of the moral conduct that governs the character of which they were created to be. I will leave you with this sermon from Peter.

Peter reminded us [1Peter1:22-25]

Amplified Bible

“22 Since by your obedience to the truth you have purified yourselves for a sincere love of the believers, [see that you] love one another from the heart [always unselfishly seeking the best for one another], 23 for you have been born again [that is, reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose] not of seed which is perishable but [from that which is] imperishable and immortal, that is, through the living and everlasting word of God.”
